Cant Export!
Jun 15th, 2004 at 3:22pm
Print Post Print Post
Since upgrading to 1.0.4 I've been having problems exporting data from Sesame. (Parent record and subrecords)

Using the default settings or custom settings, the CPU meter jumps up to about 85% and sesame just sits on the export screen (after pressing export button).

I tried to export (all LE's) on just 10 records and finally had to 'end task' after about 1/2 hour.

I also watched the virutal memory slowly diminish, then had to restart the server due to "insufficient memory" after the 'end task'.

Anyone else having problems exporting?

Steve

Hi Steve

I also have an exporting problem. Right now, all my databases are using Relational links. I want to try going Natural Links. I follow Erika's rules`... Quote:
You do not need to alter any of your existing Forms, except for the Subform containers on the Parent Form.

1. From your top level Parent Form, export all the data, including all the data from all the subrecords. Just choose Set All in the Export Spec and accept the defaults.
2. Go into your design. Delete all the subforms from your Parent Form.
3. Using Field Manager, delete all the Subrecord fields from your Parent Database.
4. Go into the design of your Parent Form. Put all the Subforms back in, this time selecting Natural Linking.
5. Go into Preview and import the file you exported.

Following Rule 1, I get the following message:

ASCII Export failed to create file Samples\Orders_Clients_Products

All fields (form and subforms) appear corectly in the spec manager. Any Idea Undecided

Regards

Serge

Ya, i'm trying step 1, also. At least your getting an error message. I'm not getting anything.

Probably a bug in this new version.

Steve,

Are you including an unbound element in your export? If so, I'm betting that removing it will fix your lockup. We are looking at catching this, but, meanwhile, getting the unbounds out of your export should fix the lockup.

I think your right. There IS a workaround becuase I was able to export yesterday when only exporting a couple of LE's.

If I have time, I'll try your suggestion tonight and let you know the results.

Thanks,
Steve

Your quick. Thanks.

So as a workaround, we can't export unbound elements, or is there a simpler remedy?

Thanks,

Steve

Correct. The workaround is to not select unbound elements as part of your export.

Serge,

Judging from your error message, you have a different problem. Either the directory you are trying to write to does not exist, or you do not have permission to write to it.

Count me in for this problem.  I get the same error.  I'm not sure what you mean by unbound elements, but we only have one form with all the fields on it, and are trying to export all as-is from one .DB file.   ???

Erika

This is a single user app and I'm trying to save to Sesame\Data\Samples which is shared.

I was able to export feilds from the Parent and the subform, so I think Erika is correct in that it must be one of the unbound LE's that is crashing the export.

Spanitz, an unbound LE is a field that does not store data when the record is closed. Its like a temporary placeholder for data that gets wiped out each time the record is closed. Just FYI.

Shared does not equate to permission. What is the Start In directory setting in your shortcut?

Erika

You'r right, It has something todo with path. If I specify full path C:\Sesame\Data\Samples\MyFile.csv, it works. if I click on Sample in the ASCII Export box and complete... Samples\MyFile.csv, it does not work.

Thanks for the help.

<okay - another stupid question>  Steve, thanks for the explanation.  How would I end up with an unbound field?  I created these databases (10? 15?) years ago in Q&A and all fields are visible and used (they all save data and can be searched on later).

You probably don't have any. Why do you believe you do? Are you locking up when you try to export?
