Old hand with Q&A V3 database

Hello all,

Just joined here as i was searching the web for answers about the old Q&A database program.

I live in Brisbane Australia and built a family history database using Q&A V3 in 1986.
It ran perfectly for years and years. Any old engineeer will tell you if it aint broke don't fix it.

Well that's how it was. I haven't touched the database for several years, but kept a DOS partition on my previous PC cause family members occasionally ring me for info.

I replaced the previous PC last year with a new fangled RAID XP set-up. I do have a spare partition that was meant for Linux, but never happened so could always make it a good old DOS partition???

The next generation now wants to hold a family get totgether and now I can't do any printouts.

Guess I should port the database to a modern program. However I really loved the simple way Q&A did everthing and it was bullit proof.

Can anyone tell me if there is a version of Q&A that will work on XP? That would be the preferred option.

I would highly recommend Sesame.  Simple to use and solid as a rock.  With just a bit a prechecking your current QA database, Sesame will convert it in minutes.

If you are set on QA, we have used Q&A 4 for years with both XP and Vista without any issues.  I just converted over the remaining databases earlier this year and we have not gone back to Q&A since.

Good luck.

Q&A versions 3,4,5 DOS all run on XP systems.

But if you need to upgrade, Sesame will also run on XP and Vista and Linux systems.

And Windows 7.   Smiley

Huh? I don't remember having any trouble with closing Sesame on Vista.

Hi David,

For Q&A technical issues, you can contact PCTA. They took over official technical support for Q&A.

On Vista, if Q&A is in a window, you can close it by left click on the "X" in upper right corner.  You don't get a warning message like you do in older OS, it just closes.  You could be running a macro, sorting, anything else, click by mistake, and goodbye Q&A, hello corruption.

I am also available for support with Q&A, still supporting many customers who will not give it up.
Contact me if I can help.

Oh! I was referring to Sesame (not Q&A) when I wrote that it works in Windows 7.
