hen I open an application the "mode

When I open an application the "mode"-box briefly shows "loading" and then...
- sometimes the application is opened, but...
- sometimes the "mode"-box shows "saving x%" and it takes several minutes to get to 100%.

What causes this?

Whether you have time to see that message depends on the size of the database and whether there are any deleted records to be cleaned up.
