Email Merge Problem

I'm a retired minister with a large mail and email list. Every Christmas I send 100-200 personalised emails and letters out.  I've handled this for some time with Sesame (I'm on 2.6) as data source, WordMerge 2.44, MS Word (I have 2003) and Outlook.

But this year, Outlook seems to have quit.  It won't receive or send mail.  I don't use it as my default email client, but Word can't be instructed to work with Thunderbird, my regular client. Rats!

So I turned to Open Office 4 for the Mail Merge function.  Everything works fine up to the point at which the program gives me the option to send mail, save the original document, or the merged one.  When I choose send, it crashes reliably and repeatably.

Not so easily defeated, I decided to learn how to use @SendMail from Sesame 2.6.  It fails to send.  I should add that I use eleutheros13@gmail.com as my sending address.  That may be important as the smtp googlemail server requires the use of a specific port (465) and there's no provision for port specification (or encryption) in @SendMail.

Thinking the problem may be with malware protection, I switched off my Avast! Pro antivirus suite and tried again.  @SendMail now fails much faster!  Operating system is Windows 7 64 bit.

All input welcome!

Hello John,

The Gmail smtp server requires SSL security which the current version of SendMail() does not speak. I believe it is a feature that development is looking into for future versions.

If you wish to use SendMail() you'll need a different SMTP server which does not require SSL.

Since you use Thunderbird there is an extension that may be what you need. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/mail-merge/

*Note: I have no experience with this add-on but it seems like it should work for you.

I use Send-It-Quiet commandline free utility that helps me send out email from Sesame through gmail account without even going through browser. It also supports attachments. Works very well.

There's a neat SSL proxy tool called Stunnel.
