HTML and PRINT Reports sort and format differently
Mar 9th, 2015 at 4:26pm
Print Post Print Post
Once the data is retrieved and sorted its time to print a report.
The report name is selected and run. Why is it that the HTML report uses a different sort and format spec than the printed version. It would be desirable to have the two reports look the same. I run the HTML report first to see if it makes sense before running the print version. But what you see in the HTML version is not what you get in the print version.

No changes are made between the printing of the HTML and the Print version.

Are there two report spec's for the HTML and Print versions?

Thanks
Rob

Why wouldn't you just print the HTML report from the browser, since you're already looking at it, rather than going back to Sesame to run a print only report?

There aren't two reports, one for print-only and one for HTML. There is one report specification that gets interpreted differently depending on which kind of "view" you prefer. They will look very different, but that is the point - you can decide which of these two "looks" is better for your purposes. But, since it is exactly the same specification, no matter which "view" you specify, the report sorts identically.

Coming from a Q&A background, you had the option of printing to screen or print to printer. Sometimes all you want is a quick view of the report to locate something, perhaps make some data edits and so forth. Once it is seen as all correct, then print to printer.

The two types of reports do present the sorted data differently though even though the same sort spec is used.

I suppose the solution would be to make two reports that format differently. One for the HTML and the other for printing.

Sometimes the report must be Printed to File for attachment to an e-mail. I can see how to do that through the HTML print because it automatically makes a copy in a folder. You just can't rename it while it is being output.

In Sesame you are presented with two types of "views" for any one report. There are "print only" reports, which can either be immediately printed or previewed on screen. And there are HTML reports which can either be previewed on screen (in a browser) or immediately printed.

In both cases the data appearing and the sort order will be identical, but the "print only" reports and the HTML reports will look quite different.

There is a second type of report, the "Quick Reports", that may be more appropriate for a "quick view" of some data. But these also support the same two views: HTML and "Print Only", either of which can be previewed on screen or immediately printed.
