Scanner Redirection for Remote Desktop (RDP)

I have a client with a new Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard machine. It is set up as a Remote Desktop Session Host.

The problem is that we need to use a scanner, that is attached to the client, while in a Remote Desktop session. Does anyone have a recommendation for a 3rd party solution to allow scanner redirection for Remote Desktop?

I found a few solutions, but would like some feedback, if anyone has experience with them. Or any other recommendations.
  • RemoteScan (remote-scan.com) - seems very expensive.
  • TSScan (terminalworks.com/remote-desktop-scanning) - reasonably priced, but does it work well?
  • Scanner for Remote Desktop (fabulatech.com/scanner-for-remote-desktop.html).

Thanks,
Carl

I don' t recall the application right now, but I remember using something a few years ago that allowed Remote host to be mapped as a drive  Could your scanner output to a mapped drive?
Product may have been Power Desk, company was purchased so name might be different now.

Carl,

Shared scanning has some peculiarities that have very little to do with computers that may be hampering development of many (inexpensive) software solutions. When you share a printer, everyone can send their document to that printer and the print requests get queued in the order received. The people can then walk to the printer and pick their document out of the middle of the stack. But with a scanner, each user has to place an object in the scanner. That leaves open the possibility that someone else will replace that object with their own before the first person is able to get back to their desk and press the scan button.

I suppose, with a hardware change, the scanner itself could have a "scan button". The user places their object on the scanner and presses the scan button. The scanner scans the object and stores the image for remote retrieval. This was how they did it when I had a chest X-Ray recently. The X-Ray machine itself stored my image until my doctor was ready to pick it up.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I ended up installing TSScan as a free trial, and so far, it has performed beautifully.

The site has two clients that each have their own scanner. TSScan allows them to put a document into their own scanner, and have it be recognized by the remote session on the server. So far, so good.

Anything serious, or just a checkup of some sort?

I quit smoking a few years ago. I thought it would be wise to make sure I didn't have good reason to continue smoking. Fortunately, only a bit of "smoker's asthma" showed up on the xray. So, no - nothing serious.

I am now on my third year completely smoke free.

That's good to hear. I think I remember that you were attempting to quit smoking when we met, back in 2007.

Congratulations on successfully quitting. Smiley
