QASPEC

Does anyone remember QASPEC? Well, it keeps asking for a username and password even when there are no passwords in the Q&A database. The dtf file did have passwords, but I removed them because QASPEC would not accept them as being valid. Yet, it still prompts me for a password even after removing all the users/groups, running "Recover database", and "Copy design only".

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem?

I eventually figured out how to trick it. But, was this a known bug with QASPEC?

I get the same results.

Tried with QA4 and QA5.
Copied design to new db, same error message re password
Designed new db from scratch and got different error about NTVDM.CPU

If you are using QASPEC to dump the lookup tables, you can use QA4LOOK.EXE instead.
If you are using QASPEC to dump the programming, you can use DTFSPECS.EXE instead.  This will also dump out the Initial Values, ReadOnly, Restricted Values, etc.  But you will need to parse the results to get the info in an import/automation format.

Bob,

Thanks for confirming that it's not just me.

BTW, I found that if the dtf file never had a password setup, then it just runs the process. But, if the dtf file ever had a password, even if you delete it, it will continue to prompt you for one. The solution was to add a password back in, and just press the enter key when prompted for a username and password, leaving them empty. Some security, eh! I also found that QASPEC extracted the programming from the original dtf file, loaded with passwords, just by leaving the username and password prompt blank.

I forgot about the blank name and password.  I think that has been the case since testing the beta version 4.0 in 1992.
