For those of you that don't see much of the internet: Firefox 3.0 is out. If you are not already using Firefox, Opera, or Safari, you might want to check it out.

If already using it, you may want to wait a while for the AddOns to catch up.

Half of mine no longer work in 3.0, glad that I kept 2.0.0.14 active.
But that was expected by me, that is why I did a parallel install.

It certainly is not a reason to stop new users from installing it.

When you say "a parallel install" what do you mean?  Did you actually manage to get two versions of Firefox to operate on the same computer?  I was told that wasn't possible.  I'd love to know how, if you did.

You can set up separate profiles, one for each version.  Make a copy of your existing profile before the installation of the new version to preserve it.

You can then install Firefox3 into a separate folder, I used .....Firefox3\ Make an icon for each profile that calls a separate version of Firefox.  Check out the article I wrote in Inside Sesame, Jan 07,  re using Firefox Profile Manager.

You also need to make sure that AddOns with xpi extensions are selected to run with each version of Firefox vs. allowing automatic file associations to work.  That way you can install AddOns to each version of Firefox separately for each profile and each version.
That will allow you to have separate AddOns for each version.

Thanks Bob, I'll give it a shot!

Before I do, though, where is the existing profile found (to back it up)?

Here is one from this system:
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\h8ojjv0f.default

Each system user will have their own path under Documents and Settings.  This shows a folder for Bob, but there are also folders for Tom, Dick, and Harry, who all sign on to Windows with their own name/password.  They each have their own Firefox settings.

The "h8ojjv0f.default" folder is for my primary profile.  I have two other profile folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\i5tfov78.Sesame Landscape Headers
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xr1807d5.SesameReports

They were created using the Firefox profile manager.  They are assigned leading groups of random numbers by Firefox.  This system does not have 3.x installed, and is still using Firefox 2.0.0.15 because some desired AddOns are not yet available for version 3.x

It it possible to get Firefox to run totally from an external drive, profile/history/passwords and all?  I'd like to ensure that all my stored passwords and browsing history never leaves the house, so that when I take my laptop out with me all of Firefox remains at home.

Yes, you could install Portable Firefox, designed for USB operation.  I have not tried that with an external hard drive, but I suspect it might work the same way.  There are instructions for running from a CD instead of USB, so this might work for you.

Go to http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable for information.  Too much to pass on here.

PS.  There are many "portable" programs that you can look at besides Firefox.

PS2 - Will we see you at SANE on Saturday?

Nope, I have a doctor's appt and then I'll be working on my sister's PC (she has 3% available hard disk space 'cuz they've saved thousands of digital photos to disk with no thought to the consequences on the system.  Heh.)
