Default Printer switching by itself
May 9th, 2005 at 8:31pm
Print Post Print Post
The heading pretty much explains it. I set the local printer to default, and a few minutes later, it will switch to another printer on the network. Sometimes it's immediate, sometimes it lets my do one print job first.
It's XP, running epson C82, and C86 printers, over a wireless network.  ??? ???

How are you setting the default?

What runs after you set default ?
What indication do you get that default has changed?  The output comes out on unexpected printer?  A popup list does not show correct default?  Other?

Is anything running Net Use with /persistent=Yes?

A good habit for printing is to NEVER use the Print icon on many program toolbars.  ALWAYS select File/Print instead whcih usually allows you to see the current printer and allow you to make a selection if it is wrong.

Setting default in control panel\printers. The little check mark sits there for a while, then moves itself to the other printer. There are four printers on the network, two parralel cabled dot printers, and two USB Epsons. It's always the Epsons that switch, and only on one machine. The other two seem to hold their defaults fine.

"Is anything running Net Use with /persistent=Yes?" yes, QA4 printing requires that little hickup.

I am now thinking that you may be temporarily losing connection to your default printer.  When that is no longer available your system will assign a different printer as the default.

You are trying to make the "local" printer the default.  What is the Port that it is output to?  Is the local printer attached directly to LPT1/2 or a COM port?

Does this only happen if the local printer is selected as a defalt?

What if you add a Generic Text printer and make it the default, does it still switch to the network printer?

Have you tried to reinstall the default printer?

Found this page of information: http://www.ss64.com/ntsyntax/printing.html

One section of particular interest is this: Quote:
If the default printer is a local printer, then roaming to a different PC (without an identical local printer) will change the default to the next available printer.

Sounds like what's happening, but I'm not sure I fully understand it, or how to beat it.  ???

I don't have an answer yet, either, but willing to work with you.  Still trying to get more info.

If using Roaming Profiles, then registry can be edited to have a default printer for the machine vs. the user.

Curious if you tried any of the items in my 9:47 posting?

The printer I keep losing, is USB, and directly connected.

Yes, that's the problem, it keeps selecting a network printer.

I can put the default to one of our Panasonic dot matrix printers, and there is no switching.

Have you tried to reinstall the default printer?
Yes, we just did a full system install. but, not since the problem started, I'll try loading a new driver.

Thanks for the feedback.  I am thinking that this is sounding more like a USB problem.

Have you checked Epson site for issues involving loss of USB connection?  Don't limit your search to your models, look at the generic communication issue.

I have also seen references about systems coming out of hibernate/sleep mode and losing USB connections, so maybe check Microsoft support also for "loinsg USB connection" issues.

Thanks Bob, I've never liked hibernate/sleep modes, and I have them shut down, we're 'always on'

The driver epson has on their site, seems to be the same as we are using, but I'm going to give it a shot anyway.
The switching has stopped for the moment, we'll see how the day progresses.
Thanks

Ha Ha
Just did a search, and it brought me back here. Stupid friggin printer still driving me nuts.
I found it listed twice in MSconfig, got rid of one, but that didn't work either.

It sounded from your previous message that you might be OK.

Again, you have changed to another printer as default and the problem is only happening if the default is a local USB printer, correct?

Here is another thought to try:
1.  Remove USB devices from the Device Manager.  Do not reboot yet.

2.  Then remove the USB printer and unplug from the USB port.

3.  Now reboot.  The system should reinstall the USB devices, maybe repairing a damaged file.

4.  Now shut down.

5.  Plug in the USB printer and reboot.  System should ID the new printer and go through the reinstallation.

Does this resolve the problem?

You may have something there, I just had a problem with a USB zip drive on that machine, and I solved it by doing the same thing. (Plus beating up the drive unit  Wink ) I'll give it a shot in the morning, it's running backup now.

Frustration sets in again. Still no go.
I'm going to look in the config files of the other computers and see if there is anything there.
