Some interesting web stats

Like most web sites, www.lantica.com gathers some generalized statistics about our visitors. These help us know what web pages are popular, how we are doing with search engines, and what browsers are being used. I thought the other forum members might find some of these interesting. For example:

We track which Operating Systems visit the web pages:
48% XP
13% 2000
8% 98
5.6% Unix
2.13% ME
1.5 NT
0.21 95

I find it fascinating that Unix (mostly Linux and Irix) is outnumbering ME, NT, and 95 - nevermind that 98 is outnumbering ME by 4 to 1. The list above covers the more typical entries, but these are kind of interesting:

4.8% Web search robots
0.65% Macintoshes
0.03% Web TV
0.01% Amiga (I miss Amiga - what a great computer!)

The browsers showing up:

58% MSIE6
12.8% Mozilla
6.37% Netscape Compatible
5.38% MSIE5
2.98% Netscape 7
0.37% Netscape 4
0.07% MSIE4
0.02% Netscape 6

That takes care of the big boys, but we also had visits from:

1.08% Teleport Pro (an "offline" browser)
0.59% Konquerer (the browser built into Linux's KDE desktop)
0.35% Opera (I would've thought this would be a lot higher)
0.25% Safari (The Mac browser)
0.13% Avant

Interesting Mark.....

I would like to make an observation about the browsers however.  I suspect one reason MSIE is so high is a function of the forum software.  I don't recall the specifics, but I know that I used to use Netscape as default browser but found that some features on the web site required me to use MSIE for the forum. (I think it had to do with YABBC tags, formatting, etc).

Now I personally use Mozilla as default, but still need MSIE when I want to use some of the features automated.  But now I am in the habit of just typing in the code like bold and color formats in the body of the text vs. switching to MSIE.

I'm using Firefox with Thunderbird (Mozilla "light") on my Irix box. The forum works very well - and (so far) every site I've tried has worked perfectly or nearly so.

I was actually most stunned by how unpopular ME is, and how popular Win98 is.

Netscape 7.2 also works fine with the Forum on both Mac and PC.

Nestscape 4.72 does not appear to use the tags properly.

Reply to this message.  Highlight some code in middle, select BOLD, and see that the bold codes go to end of the text.  Does not take effect on the highlighted sections.

Insert URL tags in middle of text, and see that tags go to end of text.  This seems to happen with all tags.  Same problem in Mozilla.  But MSIE does work properly.  That is why I used to use MSIE, was forced to use it if I wanted to use tags normally.
===============
No surprise to me re SE/ME.  I think the word has been out for a long time, 98SE is OK, but stay away from ME.  Don't remember the details, but the bottomline was the important message.
